#watchthegrowth

Most people of this generation are reaching a stage in their lives where a fresh approach to life, love and responsibility is of the greatest necessity. It is no different for the men, the artist who have embarked on this journey.

“Watch The Growth”, encapsulates the attitude of an entire generation. Musically, each artist has built a sure foundation based on the elements set forth by its Genre, Hip Hop. Among, all the negative press surrounding Hip Hop, there are plenty who are filtering positivity and purity through music and most importantly lifestyle.

It is for those who live with this positive outlook, that WTG appeals to and speaks for...

“Yo, son, this thing we call Hip Hop, ya know, is all about location”

Powerful words that reached me in the depth of my own “SOL” (pun intended)

Sol Infinite, the emcee of all emcees, with an undeniable depth of intelligence superseding the most common of rappers, has forged his way into our stereos with eclectic lyrics and sounds. I believe strange is an even more descriptive adjective to express the nature of Sol’s work. Strange in the sense of its uniqueness for sound. While most emcee’s are straddling the fence of relativity and creativity, Sol crosses the fence and dwells happily in the land of unchartered creativity, not at all desiring to be relative to the public. This though does not mean that we cannot still relate.

I appreciate Sol’s personality much more when I listen to his art. His ability to capture his scattered thoughts into a symphony of sound, is entirely impressive. The “Watch The Growth” tour was inaugurated on the reality, that there lacks authentic personality in hip hop…or if it does exist that we may have possibly ignored it, so we pursue it.

Sol, definitely is the “personality” among us…he makes me adore Hip Hop again, he embodies the impossibilities, and articulates that in an uncanny way.

“Within, Destination” Sol’s current double disc Lp, is a direct reflection of thee above synopsis given. Each song calls us to a different place. “Visions of a Better Day” gives us the power to hope again. “Can’t Believe These Dreams” are for the “dreamers” who are wide awake. Overall, “Within, Destination”, in itself bears the culture of “counter-culturalism.” It expresses how to escape the trendiness robbing music of its authenticity as a language spoken within us, intended to guide us on our journey towards a not so obvious destination.

Sol Infinite is synonymous with Growth…So Watch Him!

Producer, DJ, Artist, Music Enthusiast, friend and father, a few words to describe the self-proclaimed “Hip Hop Philosopher” aka Black Pawn. Pawn, 1/4 of the Watch The Growth tour, has become like the technician, the workhorse of this tour bill. His constant aid to each of us in this process has been an awesome display of service. The “glue” that holds this eclectic group of artist together. When artist take risks to see growth in their careers, we always are benefited by having security blankets that assure us we are moving in the right direction. This is the experience Pawn brings to #WatchTheGrowth.

While writing this spotlight, I revisited Black’s “A Breath of Fresh Air” record released April 2011. It took me on a travel through nostalgia . What I noticed most throughout the production was jazz tunes, sounds that always take you to a certain place in time. I didn’t feel manipulated, I felt encouraged to open up and allow the musician to guide us through this mental terrain. One particular record “Fiends” was a direct representation of that idea. This record was preceded by a skit featuring several artist including Sol Infinite (artist on Watch The Growth Tour). This skit interviews artist who share their influences as emcees. It is important in Hip Hop to maintain the central principle that sets the precedent for what it is we do with this music. That principle being OUR History!! According to Pawn, “A Breath of Fresh Air” was born from current events and seeing the need for bringing back what Chuck D called “The black CNN”. This I believe he accomplished, but I cannot believe that he is finished with this expression. I am excited for the next project.

Ultimately, Black Pawn, represents the #WatchTheGrowth movement to the fullest, rather musically, personally, or spiritually. Being connected to the truth that is human, a truth that reveals character, that shapes thinking. An intelligent ambassador for a generation, who does not need much more than encouragement to perceive anew, to perceive the realities from a wise “eye”.

Come Let us grow together..
